* note this is the original movie poster the one most frequently seen as of late is the 10th anniversary edition cover

Umm…Why have I not done a review on this movie before now?!? Major fail on my part! I just re-watched this movie this weekend and remembered why I absolutely love this movie. I even own this movie in the original edition and regrettably not in the 10th anniversary director’s cut edition. How is this even possible?! I don’t even know how that happened. Back to the movie though…

The movie is the story about a boy, Donnie Darko, from Middlesex, Iowa who by the school board and his parents is a schizophrenic  who is in therapy from his previous “crimes”. The town of Middlesex is a conservative Mid-west town where every talk that does not agree with the bible is wrong. Donnie continually disagrees with the cultural norms especially in school and that gets him into trouble. At the beginning of the movie, Donnie is dragged out of his bedroom in the middle of the night by a person known as Frank the Bunny and the next morning wakes up on the community golf course. When Donnie returns to his house he finds that an airplane engine has crashed fallen through his room. When the police and the FAA tell his parents that they have no idea where this engine came from and Donnie finds out that he does not know where Frank the Bunny came from he begins to wonder about time travel. Frank the Bunny repeatedly comes to visit Donnie telling him that the world will end at the end of the month which is Halloween. Donnie tells his therapist about his new imaginary friend Frank the Bunny and she is only concerned to some extent. There are a series of events that lead up to Halloween, but I refuse to spoil the movie for you in anyway.

If you have not seen this movie I highly suggest that you do. It is one of the most popular indie movie ever and it includes an amazing all-star cast which include: Jena Malone, Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sean Astin, Drew Barrymore and others. If you end up watching the movie and hating it feel free to come back and tell me about it. See you in the next post!
